What is BMI and how is it calculated?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple number that compares your weight to your height. Doctors and health organisations use it as a quick screening tool to see whether a person may be underweight, in a healthy range, or overweight.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
For example, a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.70 m tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2, which is in the normal range.
BMI categories (WHO)
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obese |
A note for South Asians
Research suggests South Asian adults can have a higher health risk at a lower BMI. Some Indian guidelines therefore use lower cut-offs, treating a BMI from 23 as overweight and 25 and above as obese. Ask your doctor which range is right for you.
Please note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat or muscle, so it can be misleading for athletes, older adults, pregnant women and children. For health advice, please consult a qualified doctor.
